Tour Description
SORRENTO AND SURROUNDING HILLS (3 hours)
Sorrento is situated on a volcanic cliff and is famous for its mild climate, its beautiful panoramic position and production of oranges, lemons and walnuts.
This beautiful town, known as “Siren Land,” was part of the noted upper class “grand tour” and visited by Henrik Ibsen, Lord Byron, John Keats, Goethe and is still a major attraction in the Campania region.
We will take you through the old quarters to discover its picturesque corners, history, art, traditions and flavours, as well as panoramic views.
This tour includes a panoramic drive around the Sorrento peninsula with a view of the bays of Naples and Salerno.
Main attractions of the guided visit:
- St Anthony’s Basilica, with its famous crypt with ex votos incorporated in it
- The St Philip and James Cathedral, with its magnificent inlaid and wooden choir stalls (inlaid wood is a typical Sorrento craft)
- The medieval “Sedil Dominova” (Dominova Seat), a rare example of a noble meeting place for people living in the area; the building has interesting frescoes.
- St Francis’s Cloisters (13th. century), and the nearby public gardens, which have a beautiful view of the bay of Naples.
- Walk down to the picturesque fishing village of Marina Grande
FULL DAY SORRENTO (7 hours)
A guided tour of the inlaid wood museum, Correale museum, or to a local farm to taste local products, can be combined with the 3 hour tour.
- The "Correale di Terranova" museum is considered to be one of the most beautiful provincial museums in Italy for its collection of porcelein, antiquity and paintings. It is situated in a 18 ͭ ͪcentury building, surrounded by an orange and lemon grove.
- The inlaid wood museum, to discover this traditional Sorrento craft.
- Local mill farm visit: farm visit, oil press, the making of the Sorrento “treccia” (plaited mozzarella cheese) and then tasting of homemade jam, oil, limoncello (lemon liqueur) and, if requested, lunch on site.
- Possibility of courses in pizza or ice-cream making, if requested
- Any entrance tickets are not included in the tour price
